The sun was shining and the laughter flowing at "Dreams Can Come True" Family Camp over the weekend of May 2-4. More than 40 families, some new and some seasoned veterans, made the trip to Camp Adahi in Menlo, GA to enjoy games, activities, and family time. Some of the activities the families were able to participate in included horseback riding, archery, fishing, canoeing, and of course, s'mores making around the camp fire!
Donna Henderson and her daughter Heather, who created "Dreams Can Come True" Family Camp for her Girl Scouts project 15 years ago, continue to put their hearts and souls into ensuring that camp runs smoothly and that families have fun and build lasting memories year after year.
From family introductions to dance parties, everyone had something to look forward to. There was "Dad to Dad" time, "Mom to Mom" time, and for the first year, even "Kid to Kid" time. Samantha Coleman, a 16 year old patient of Dr. Sargent's, spoke to all of the kids about her experience with her cleft lip and palate and answered all of the questions they had. These discussions provide a positive outlet for parents and children alike to express feelings and talk about experiences they have had with others who are in similar situations.
Volunteers ranging from middle schoolers to adults brought food, prizes, open hearts and helping hands to camp and we could not be more thankful. We are already looking forward to next year!
